Mystery Magenta Sludge on Remote Tasmanian Coast Prompts Concerns of Possible Algal Bloom
Authorities in the island state are working to identify a rosy sludge that has materialized on a isolated coast, with some scientists anxious it could be an phytoplankton proliferation.
Widespread Occurrence Across Coastline
The pink-tinged sludge materialized across a portion of Randalls Bay about 37 miles south of the capital. A comparable ooze has also been documented on areas of another local beach and Little Taylors Bay.
Samples Gathered for Testing
Specimens have been taken and sent to the Environment Protection Authority for testing. A representative stated that "phytoplankton proliferations are a normal phenomenon in reaction to changes in nutrients, warmth, precipitation or light".
"The events are occasionally called red or pink tides because the proliferations can color the water red," the official said. "Not all algal blooms are harmful, with numerous types functioning as a major source of nourishment for creatures in the aquatic ecosystem."
"The most common cause of red tides in local waters is the oceanic algae Noctiluca scintillans, which can create luminous nighttime effects at night."

Dinoflagellates are a phytoplankton species that usually serve as the ocean's detritus consumers. During a bloom, there is a fast increase in their colonies that disrupts the normal functioning of ecosystems.
These events have been equated with underwater bushfires and can persist in growing as long as conditions are ripe. In worse situations, vulnerable aquatic environments can be devastated as sea creatures is eliminated or smothered, providing more food for the proliferation.

Another region not long ago confronted a catastrophic algal bloom along its southern coastline after a string of sea temperature spikes, which extended across a vast area. "You usually see a bloom of the organism after a outbreak of something else, or an event such as a salmon or coral spawning event," she said.

A campaigner, who collected samples of the pink sludge in the state, commented it appeared the potential proliferation had "expanded greatly" and indicated the fish farming business was the probable cause, citing similar cases overseas.
"Thus we needs to issue a clear message here, the government and the EPA need to act to this. We need to examine the specimens we've gathered and we need to put word out the community here," she emphasized.
She said she had concerns for community health after noticing a prickling feeling along her arms and face while being splashed with contaminated seawater.

An conservation group has reported lifeless animals and dead sea cucumbers being found on the beach, with a longtime environmental campaigner labeling the event as an "environmental emergency" and demanding the local leader to see and "assume command the reaction that government must be doing".
